Uses of SFP Connectors
Small form-factor pluggable, or
SFP, devices are hot-swappable I/O equipment used mainly in network and storage
switches; they permit the switch to accord to fiber cables of various varieties
-- as well as single-mode and multimode -- and speeds (1 Gbps, 10 Gbps), or
maybe Ethernet copper cables, like CAT5e and CAT6.
Almost all enterprise-class
switches represent two or more SFP ports, allowing them to become a part of a
circle or star-based configuration spread among entirely different buildings,
floors or areas, and associated via fiber optic cabling.
In several cases, SFP ports are
called mini-Gigabit interface convertor (GBIC) modules, as they need replaced
the older GBIC transceivers.
SFPs will be used and
interchanged on a large form of product, and that they will be interchanged in
mixtures of 1000BASE-T, 1000BASE-SX, 1000BASE-LX/LH, 1000BASE-EX, 1000BASE-ZX
or 1000BASE-BX10-D/U on a port-by-port basis.
